Gingivitis left untreated will lead to a more serious condition called Periodontitis. At this stage the plaque and calculus spread below the gum line. the bacteria continue to grow and produce toxins that damage the supporting bone and fibers. The gums may seperate from the tooth and start to receed. A pocket forms below the gumline trapping plaque and food debris.
