Plaque becomes calculus if not removed completely every day by toothbrushing and flossing. Calculus (tartar) is a hard, crusty deposite on the tooth that can not be removed by brushing and flossing.  As you can see to the left calculus is visible above the gum line. However it is the hidden calculus below the gum line that does the most harm.
