Plaque is an almost invisible film that forms on the tooth. In large amounts, plaque can be seen as illustrated to the left. It has a fuzzy appearence and  accumulates where the gum meets the tooth. Bacteria like to live in this plaque and they produce toxins that irritate the gums causing gingivitis. This is the beginning of periodontal disease.
